Bazaar or Vogue

One of the most asked questions in my life is: Should I get this magazine or not?

I really want to get Harper Bazaar (AU) Sept'09 but I think I shall wait for Vogue's 50th Anniversary issue to come out this Wednesday.

What do you think? See here

Glossy Bits

GLOSSY BITS, after so long...

Hilary Duff stars in her own clothing line, the Femme for DKNY Jeans. The photoshoot was photographed by The Sartorialist himself, aka Scott Schuman in SoHo, New York.

Taylor Momsen celebrated her 16th Birthday with fellow GG cast and her band, Pretty Reckless.

(Updated) Teen Vogue September, Nylon, GF Cover

Teen Vogue September'09
(Not-so) Little J, aka Taylor Momsen, makes her debut on Teen Vogue cover. I kind of have the feeling she'll be a 'repeat offender' in future covers of Teen Vogue, but I don't mind, really.
The cover looks fabulous! It's fresh and Taylor doesn't look over-styled - there's still an essence of her usual style both on and off Gossip Girl.
The September issue hits the newsstand on 4th August.

Nylon - The Denim Issue
On the edgier side of glossy world, Sienna Miller makes a comeback through Nylon Sept'09 - The Denim Issue. I'm not a fan of her and was quite surprised why Nylon had picked her to be the covergirl. But with no doubt, she had the ability to pull off really great style. I'm loving the soft pink Doc Martens she's sporting on the photoshoot.
This issue is also a double-cover issue (Don't you love it when they have a double cover?), so pick whichever you like the most.

Last but not least, Girlfriend Sept'09 - Back home, Emma Watson still steals the limelight; although glancing at the cover, the Twilight torso insert managed to take away my attention from her for a little why. Umm; boys and their abs...

Back to Routines

Back in Melbourne! So far the weather hasn't been so harsh on me, although hearing that Sydneysiders are enjoying a warm 20*, I'm quite jealous.

My work experience at Who and Dolly went well. I had a fabulous time; probably the most amazing two weeks I ever had in a while. :)
At both magazines, I got to work in various departments - mainly editorial, fashion and beauty. In the first few days at Who, I had unpacked 3 massive luggages worth of clothes, bags and shoes; not to mention arranging & returning items from the rest of the closet. This was where my obsession to organize my wardrobe the skill I've learnt from tidying floordrobe/wardrobe come in handy.
At Dolly, I had so much fun with the friendly bunch of editorial team, along with the other 2 workies (Belle & Josey). This is the world where 'I read too much Teen Vogue' become relevant and beneficial to the work I'm doing.

But of course, it's not all glitzy and glamorous. Behind every glossy you see in the newsagent, is a massive team that works hard everyday (hello, deadlines!). I'm really grateful to have the chance to be a part of it.

“ Fashion is not an “easy” career path and this is especially true for the NYC fashion world. If you are not a strong and capable person to begin with than this is not the place for you…Unfortunately the misconceptions that films and TV give of working in the fashion industry have been matched by the unrealistic fictionally glamorized life of an intern courtesy of The Hills. Thanks to MTV a whole generation of young people see a fashion internship as a fun, empty headed, way to spend a summer and the reputation of fashion as a fluff job continues." via 39thandbroadway

Now, I'm back to uni & all that jazz,
but I promise I'll do something about this blog.

Sydney Sider

Hello again, and this time, it's hello from Sydney! :)
Just to let you know, considering it's winter, the weather here is greaaaat (the sun exist) - especially in comparison to Melbourne (the windy windy rain, freezing weather sometimes forget to stop).

Yeah, so here I am in Sydney. I left Melbourne on Sunday morning, arrived in the afternoon and so far, I had been having a fantastic time (minus the public transport confusion).
I'm gonna be here in Sydney for two weeks and be back to Melbourne just on time for uni to start.

This Sydney trip is quite special because it's my first trip to Sydney and I'm not just here for a holiday. This week, I am doing a work experience with Who magazine. And should everything goes according to plan, I'll be doing a work experience with Dolly next week.
Can you smell the excitement?! :D

Today, I started my first day at Who and I'm already lovin' it. I hope the rest of the week goes well and I'll be soaking up as much fun and learning experience as I could while I'm here!
Wish me luck.

PS, If you're looking forward to some glossy reviews, I'm afraid you're gonna have to wait a little bit longer.
I still have no Teen Vogue with me.

Kisses from across Sydney Harbour Bridge,

C.

What Do I Do when My Love is Away...

Hello dearies,
At the moment I'm on the train. Yes, that's right - the public transport. Why? I'm currently experiencing the '24-hr in a day is not enough' period. I've been wanting to update the blog since (about) 2 weeks ago, but there was always something that failed me to do so.
Oh, btw, thank you so much for being such an understanding reader - although I've been MIA since ages ago. Cited reason: uni work was unbelievable overwhelming. But I'm glad it's over - and my hard work paid off.

I must say I've been feeling quite lost & uninformed in the glossy world. Had not read a magazine and all my faves blogs for a long time. My glossy fix in the past month only included glancing outside the newsagent window at the displayed latest issues, and outdated Cosmoplolitan mags at work. I'm trying to catch up now (and that's probably why I think 24 hours would never be enough to gulp down everything; on top of many other things I have to do. Like, sleeping for a healthy 8 hours...)

But I'm glad to be back... A lot has happened since last month:
Selena Gomez on Teen Vogue followed by Emma Watson this month, Nylon Music issue, Michael Jackson passed away, Rove McManus got married, Taylor Swift dominated the local teen magazines cover and what is with RobPatt/KStew relationship?, New Moon trailer is out (I'm not very excited about it) and latest Harry Potter movie is coming to the cinemas! (yay!)

I was meant to get the August issue of Teen Vogue (Back to School) but someone bought it before I do. And there was only a copy in the shop. I might buy it when I get a chance to.
For now, I'll enjoy the July issue of RUSSH (beautiful cover featuring Katie Fogarty).

Stay tuned for more.
xoxo,
C.

Nylon May '09 - Young Hollywood issue

I always love the "Young Hollywood" issue from any magazines; Nylon, Teen Vogue, Vanity Fair. It's usually a good buy - like an investment buy - to find out who's who and what's going to be the Next Big Thing in upcoming months.

I initially didnt plan to buy this issue of Nylon. I didn't get excited for its cover & its 45 Stars of Next Generation cover line. But when I picked up the magazines and was just planning to flick through it, I got sucked into the Almost Famous world Nylon offers.

Nylon has done a terrific job in carefully handpicking the 45 stars featured in this issue. Who doesn't love Kat Dennigs (and Olivia Thrilby)? Kat's blog is one pure source of entertainment (read it religiously) and last night, I've planned to watch her vlog to when I get the chance.
Both Olivia Thrilby and Kat Dennings will star in upcoming movie The Answer Man.

I'm not going to name everyone listed in the issue, but here are some that you might be already familiar with...

Jackson Rathbone (Twilight), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad), Dreama Walker+Amanda Setton+Nicole Fiscella+Yin Chang (Blair's sidekicks in GG), Anna Sophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia), Isabel Lucas (Transformer 2), new Skin cast, Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionare & previously, Skin).

Speaking of new stars and upcoming big things, I'd like to have your special attention to Paper Heart. Just to start it all, Michael Cera is in it... if you were like me, this movie had already made it into the list of Favourite Movies.
Paper Heart is a documentary about love by Charlene Yi, a girl who doesn't believe in love. This movie is a docos but - not a real documentary... Charlene Yi and Michael Cera plays character, but uses their own names. Complicated much? Hope IMDB could help. :)

Here's the trailer:

In real life, Charlene Yi is a Canadian comedian and had starred in some small roles in Semi-Pro and Knocked Up.

Other stars in this fabulous Nylon issue includes:
- Taylor Momsen, looking absolutely stunning in the fashion spread. She also talked a little bit about her music band and upcoming fashion design project.
- Mathew Williamson talked about his collaboration with H&M
- The Olsen Sisters and Steve Madden on their shoe line.

One little annoying thing I spot in the mag: How come Peaches Gedolf's occupation is stated as journalist? She is not.

But yeaah. this issue get two thumbs up! Pretty much everything from page 95-147 is worth reading/looking at. Not to mention the other bits and pieces earlier in the magazines. I can guarantee you this is a much fun required readings, compare to your uni notes.

Marvin's editor letter doesn't even leave me cold, like he usually does to me.
If you are still doubting to buy/not to buy this issue, or having "I'll just wait 'til the sea-freight comes in" thought...See the light and run to nearest newsagent.

NYLON, I love you.

Girlfriend - June 2009

So it's RobPatt & KStew again on the cover. What are your thoughts?
I think this is definitely a better choice of picture, compared to the one they had 2 issues ago. But, I'm really disappointed they have chosen to have another Twilight cover. Seriously, I'm half-annoyed with the whole Twilight hype. Move on already...
I understand probably one of the reasons why Girlfriend has decided to have another Twilight cover is to highlight their featured story on Twilight phenomenon; between a Twihard and a Twihater. But after reading the article, I still don't think Girlfriend made the best decision by having RobPatt & KStew again on the cover. Through this, had Girlfriend actually showed some biasness towards the Twilight phenomenon debate?

I particularly enjoyed reading the Body Love section. Although airbrushing and photo re-touching are no suprise to anyone, I think it's nice to have some reality check on our perception of our body and what has been presented by the media.

"48-hour Tech Famine" was a fun read because no tech was a description of my life last week.

- No iPod: I was a magnet to weird people on the train. Not a good experience.
- No TV : no time to watch the telly & I missed Rove, too!
- No phone: the phone I use is still functioning, but it was my brother's. So I don't actually have a phone.
- No Internet: my laptop power supply died & I had to survive a long weekend without a laptop.

Back to the magazine, this issue's fashion shoot & features were not very satisfying to my liking. Maybe I'd just been bitten too hard by the early-winter bug and all I wanted to see in mags now are warm clothes and nice boots. :)

Dool's column (pg.103 and pg.59) is probably a total let down to the whole magazine. I'm sorry, but I just find his articles pointless and a total waste of page. He probably wanted his article to
be quite humorous and casual (and he's probably a good writer) but I just don't get him.

I have to say, this is a very bland issue of Girlfriend. I applaud the attractive cover (by that I mean good photo choice & colour scheme), but content wise it's still lacking the monthly goodness Girlfriend usually offer.
Buy it for the bonus! Love fingerless gloves - especially if you live in Melbourne and this year, winter had came 5 weeks too early.

xoxo,
C.

Weekend Treats

Life's finally calmed down a little bit so today, I stopped by Magnation to get some glossy/caffeine fix.

Straight from the newsstand to the blog: NYLON May'09 & Girlfriend June'09.
Review will be posted over the weekend. I have to clean up my room now... :)

Also, don't miss out on the latest issue of Frankie (they have an adorable fashion shoot showcasing warm & fuzzy knits) & RUSSH!

Much love! TGIF!

Glossy Bits - Late Edition

Glossy Bits
I was supposed to post this on Easter Monday, but somehow totally forgot about it.
Yesterday, a friend of mine came and she went straight to my magazine corner in my room. After 5 minutes of mumbling, "Seen this one and this one...", she finally asked me, "So, do you have any new mags?"
My pathetic reply: "Sorry. But no."
Yeah, truth be told I haven't bought anything since God-knows-when. Need to take mental health day :(

Leighton Meester on NYTimes.

On character Blair Waldorf: "I actually find Blair naïve. I look at young girls like her who are obsessed with guys and with being the most popular and the prettiest, and I just want to shake them. Maybe you just grow up a little faster when you’re a young performer, but I was definitely never like that."

Carl Riseley, the Australian Idol graduates (probably the only one Idol finalist I like), is set to release his second album on April 24th. The album is called "The Stillest Hour". And here's the video clip..

Just a Distraction (to Stop Me from Doing My Journos)

Random Things I Love...

Can't wait to get my hands on these glossies:
1. Harper Bazaar (UK)
2. Shop 'Til You Drop

TV Shows I want to religiously watch but never had the chance:
1. Dexter - it's on late at night & I need to sleep early because the next day I happen to start working at 8 AM. I suck at waking up early.

2. Criminal Minds - it's on at the same time with House, as well as Gruen Transfer & Lawrence Leung... asfghsajdhajgkiq!, there's so many entertainment on Wednesday night.

3. Medium - never had the chance to watch it since it's back on telly, because instead of being a couch potato on Friday night, I now work/hang-out/do uni work/too tired to do anything.
4. Skins - omg. I wish I had a clear reception for SBS.

Books & other inspirations:
1. The Age Cheap Eats 2009
2. The Secret Diary of a London Call Girl
Watched a few episodes of the TV shows & I fell in love with the series. Not because it has a lot of nudity & sex scene (duh! Underbelly has a lot of these too, you know), but I found the way they shot the scenes is a bit different. And I love London. And Billie Piper is gorgeous.
3. Chictopia.com

Little things in life:
1. Lemon poppy seed cookies.
2. "I want to go shopping!"
3. Nail polish.

Contemplating to create an account for:
1. Tumblr
2. Twitter
Big deal! You see, I HAD Twitter account in 2006. Back then, it didn't seem like it wasn't gonna be the next big thing. I gave it two years and eventually deleted my account August last year.
My last update:

[Update on the status: I certainly hadn't been able to concentrate on uni & still pursue my own interest.]

Now everyone's on Twitter and I'm not sure if I want to Twitter again.
Also, I've been contemplating to create a Tumblr. Because after first discovering it last year, there's an increasing number of awesome Tumblr I adore & want to be a part of.

So, the question is: to Tumblr or to Twitter? comment below.

Happy Easter, everyone!

Teen Vogue May' 09 - Miley Cyrus on Cover

This looks so much 'acceptable' than the one for Glamour.
[More later - I've just come home from work :D ]

Glossy Bits - 123 Covers...

To kick start your first Monday in April, I present you 3 latest glossy cover (May 2009 issue).
I might have to warn you that there's only one pleasant-to-look-at cover. And should you decide not to ruin your Monday with a glimpse of Miley Cyrus/Taylor Swift, look away after the first picture.
The good one:
- Britain It Girl who had recently moved to New York, Alexa Chung, stars in Harper Bazaar (UK) May 2009. The cover looks stunning and the photoshoot doesn't disappoint either.

And for the bad ones:
- Glamour with Miley Cyrus.
I've got no opinion on Miley Cyrus in general. But for this particular cover: I just can't stand her 'smiley' faces.

- Seventeen (US) starring weird looking Taylor Swift.
Is that even her? You'll question this even more once you get to see the photoshoot.

I feel so bad for posting this entry; the Taylor Swift might scare you away. And all these looks so bad after the beautiful, beautiful ELLE pages. :'(
*Seriously, let me know if you can't take this anymore and I'll remove the post.

Some ELLE Love...

I've been deprived from the glossies far too long... Uni & work made up 80% of my life and when I'm not in uni/work, I'm sleeping. So apologies everyone (including my friends who now assumed that I charged hourly rates for me to hang out with them. Yes, that's right.)

And if you remember, I've been wanting to get myself an issue of UK Elle; not sure when this will happen, but the other night I spent some quality times with blogs around the bloggerland and found some of ELLE goodness.

Let's share the love...

1. ELLE Italia - April 2009: Covergirl Mila Jovovich.

The photoshoot is too beautiful & I can sort of see her in a series of different mood/character.

2. ELLE US April 2009- styled by Erin Wasson

I'm not a massive fan of Erin Wasson, but there's something in this photoshoot that is so eye-catching. The colour combination, I think?

3. ELLE UK - April 2009

I was planning to buy this, but didn't because I'm not a fan of Jen Anniston. Considering air-freight ELLE UK is rather expensive, I gave it a pass. Nonetheless, the thing I like most from ELLE UK is their page-layout. Secondly, the Memoir column.

And here's Kylie Minogue gracing the latest cover of ELLE UK.

That's enough ELLE for now...

Glossy Bits - Star Spotting...

Glossy Bits

Vanity Fair web-exclusive: J.Lo, Camilla Belle, Ben Barnes, Ashley Tisdale, Rob Patt, Cam Gigandet, Brandon T Jackson and few other actors starred in the re-creation of the movie West Side Story photographed by Mark Seliger.

Lindsay Lohan's wish came true when IMG offered her a modelling contract.
From her recent Nylon's interview: "I love doing photo shoots… I mean, if I could just sign with IMG and do ad campaigns and model more, I’d do that… because that’s fun for me. That’s not work."

Rumours are also circulating about:

- Agyness Deyn and boyfriend/fiance Albert Hammond Jr. has broken up.

- Marc Jacobs and his partner are planning to adopt a baby girl.

- While Nicole Richie plans to expand her accesories line to clothing and shoes, Lauren Conrad's collection line has been put to hiatus, indefinetely.

[Sources: Vanity Fair & the Cut]

That's all for now, because I keep forgetting on what I want to post. Hee.

Glossy Bits - All Over the Place

Hello, dearest! Things have been very slowly here because uni & work (yay, I'm working now!)have taken over my time, thus I have less time to devour all glossiness.
My copy of April Teen Vogue (seen last when I took the pic last weekend) went missing somewhere... As soon as I find it, I'll start the reviews.

Glossy Bits

- Nylon goes back to 1999 with Lindsay Lohan. See more of the photos here.

- Chanel Iman hosts MTV new TV series House of Style , in partnership with Teen Vogue. The show will give insight to the latest fashion trends and tips, also some interviews with designers. Chanel's thought on switching career: "I'm thinking of slowing down on modeling and branching out to other things. I want to pursue some new and old dreams and start making them happen. House of Style is definitely just the start. I want to do television, film, music and designing. I want to do it all!"

- Don't let your habits ruins your chance to live your life to the fullest. Here's some tips on How to Break Your Habits I took from ELLE UK February issue.

Break your habit web:
-(When you're about to do the habit, stop and) Hug yourself
-Stare at something for 30s, then close your eyes
-Make up 3 new words and their meanings
-Write down a good things about your life
-Do something different everyday
-Read different newspaper or magazines
-Write something for 20 mins
-Give up your favourite drink
-Don't wacth TV for an evening
-Catch up with old friends

That's all for now! Have a nice weekend!
xoxo, C.
